What Was I Supposed to Say?

I was at Fox Island Market two weeks ago today with my friend Selah. Next to me was a lady who sold soaps and lotions. Across from me was a US Army Ranger. The first lady who walked through brushed them both by and stopped at my booth. She picked up the book with a comment of, "This looks interesting." She looked at the cover for a bit, then she turned it over and started reading the back. After about a minute of this, she asked, "What is this book about?"

I launched into my usual summary: "Darkwoods is an epic fantasy about a battle between good and evil. All the characters are animals, and the foxes are trying to take over the world, but the rest of the animals are trying to stop them."

Usually I go on from there, but she cut me off and said, "Ah, so it's just like the Democrats and the Republicans!"

Not sure how to respond, I stammered, "Uh, well ma'am, I don't know that I would go that far-"

She interrupted me and said, "Oho, I would." She put the book down and walked off.

The Ranger burst out laughing, and the lady next to me said, "So who's the foxes and who's the mice?"

As you may have guessed, I have no clue what I'm supposed to say to that. For anyone who is curious, there is absolutely no allusion to or representation of American politics in my book. One day I might like to write stuff with political references, but not this time.
